Set in Belém, the vibrant gateway to the Amazon, COP30 carried deep symbolic weight. Marking ten years since the Paris Agreement, Brazil hosted the conference under the banner of mutirão—collective action and solidarity. The choice of location placed one of Earth's most critical ecosystems at the center of global climate diplomacy, as well as the topics of indigenous rights, social justice and participation. The spirit of inclusiveness shaped the event´s emphasis on implementation and action with Brazil acting as a bridge builder between developed and developing countries.

One kilogram of sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆) traps as much heat as 23 500 kg of CO₂ and lingers in the atmosphere for roughly 3 200 years (IPCC). In a significant move toward reducing industry related greenhouse gas emissions, the Global Matchmaking Platform on Industrial Decarbonization has officially been launched at COP29 and has now become fully operational. Initiated by the Climate Club, hosted by UNIDO and supported particularly by Germany, the online hub aims to enhance cooperation on decarbonization solutions and practical steps between industries and relevant stakeholders.

At the climate conference in Baku - already named in advance the "finance COP" - the results of the negotiations on new financing targets and commitments, bundled under the term NCQG (New Collective Quantified Goal), were eagerly awaited. With a goal of annual USD 300 billion of climate finance, the result is disappointing and falls far short of the USD 1.3 trillion per year that experts say is necessary. Other negotiations also proved to be tough. The negotiations on technology development and transfer focused primarily on the structure of the “technology implementation program”.

The 2024 Bonn Climate Change Conference, consisting of the 60th sessions of the Subsidiary Bodies (SB60), convened from 3rd to 13th of June at the World Conference Center in Bonn, Germany. Discussions covered crucial topics like the Global Stocktake (GST), the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance (NCQG), the Mitigation Work Programme (MWP), adaptation, loss and damage, and other implementation matters under the Paris Agreement. However, the meeting concluded with progress proving difficult on many fronts.
