Reducing SF6 Emissions in the Power Sector: The Role of Development Banks - Workshop 3rd of June in Bonn

With a global warming potential of 24,300, sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) is an extremely harmful greenhouse gas, predominantly used in the power sector. Given grid expansion projects around the world, along with major switchgear replacement, emissions are at risk of rising in the future.

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) sees the need for urgent and coordinated action to tackle SF6 emissions from grid infrastructure globally.

Therefore, in close cooperation between BMWK, the Climate Technology Centre & Network (CTCN) and the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) a workshop for Development Banks will be held as side event of this year´s UNFCCC SB-meeting in Bonn. The objective of the event is to bring together representatives from governments and development banks to initiate an ongoing exchange on the challenge of SF6 emissions and envisage cooperative pathways towards effective mitigation.

The workshop represents a next step towards an international multi-stakeholder initiative on S6 in the electricity sector being launched by BMWK, and follows closely on last year´s workshop with representatives from developing and emerging countries and the industry on SF6 in Berlin. The initiative will work towards stakeholder engagement as well as finance and policy options for SF6-free alternatives and a long-term global SF6 phase-out. The workshop is for invited persons only.
